FUJI XEROX – COLOTECH IDOL + CARBON NEUTRAL [CN228]
Fuji Xerox Australia has undertaken a rigorous verification and assessment process to provide a carbon neutral product.
The Carbon Reduction Institute undertook a greenhouse gas impact analysis of Fuji Xerox Australia’s Colotech Idol + Carbon Neutral paper, which considered the product’s greenhouse gas emissions impact from ‘cradle to grave’.
Colotech Idol + Carbon Neutral paper is the ideal sheet for producing high quality colour print or conventional black and white on a super smooth acid free sheet, which has an archival Specification ISO 9706.
The analysis encompasses all greenhouse gas emissions from transport, processing, manufacture of pulp and paper, to the delivery of the paper product to Fuji Xerox customers. The disposal phase by customers has also been included.
Colotech Idol + Carbon Neutral is an imported paper made from Elemental Chlorine Free pulp (ECF) from farmed plantations that are ISO14001 environmentally accredited. The internationally Fuji Xerox accredited mill is accredited with ISO14001 (Environmental Protection) and ISO9001 (Quality Control) ensuring an environmentally friendly, quality paper. Colotech Idol + Carbon Neutral also qualifies for ISO9706 (Permanent Paper) and is acid free, allowing archival storage of your documents for several hundred years. Moisture levels and curls are computer controlled to Fuji Xerox International specifications.

This analysis was conducted in adherence to the recommended methods outlined in the ISO 14044 series. The goal of this study was to enable these brands to be offered as carbon neutral products through the purchase of carbon credits equal to the products' impact as quantified in this study. The intended audience of this study, to whom the results of this study are intended to be communicated to, is FUJI XEROX, who commissioned it. The system boundary included all of the following subsystems and components:
- Forest management and harvesting
- Processing of purchased recycled pulp
- Paper production at Fuji's partnering paper mill
- Raw material (fillers & starch)
- Transport (road and sea transport between life cycle stages)
- Production of electricity and steam purchased by Fuji's partnering paper mill
- Production of fuel consumed at Fuji's partnering paper mill.
- Packaging materials
- Disposal in Australia (average landfill and recycling rates assumed)
While excluding the following:
- Production and maintenance of capital goods (eg. embodied emissions in buildings, machinery and equipment). These were excluded as the equipment has a life well beyond the discrete batches of paper product that it produces.
- Utilisation phase of paper by customers. This was excluded because it has an insignificant impact on the total carbon footprint.
- Few minor Inputs and outputs that represent less than 5% of the paper mass.
- Carbon stored in the paper is not included in this analysis since the retention of carbon within the paper through recycling cannot be guaranteed.
- The corporate overhead of Fuji Xerox, including emissions from business overheads such as design and marketing and the energy to run other activities in the business not directly related to Fuji Xerox.
Figure 1 illustrates a simplified representation of these boundaries.
Data was collected through correspondence with Fuji Xerox and relevant partners (suppliers, manufacturers, etc.).
Emission factors (in kg of CO2e per unit of flow) were sourced or derived from a selection of robust references and applied to each component of the entire life-cycle process. These included values for kg CO2e produced per kWh of electricity, per litre (and type) of fuel combusted, per tonne.km freighted (ground, sea and air type), per material embodied within the paper (embodied emissions), per litre of wastewater produced and per kg of waste sent to landfill. All emission sources were then related to the amount of paper that they served to produce so that a breakdown on a per-tonne-of-paper-produced could be derived.
For all processes included within the operational boundaries of the LCA, the emissions of all major greenhouse gases (as covered by the Kyoto Protocol) were accounted for. These gases are:
- carbon dioxide (CO2),
- methane (CH4),
- nitrous oxide (N2O),
- hydrofluorocarbons (HFCs),
- perfluorocarbons (PFCs),
- and sulphur hexafluoride (SF6)
A report was developed to communicate the total net greenhouse gas impact of each brand to Fuji Xerox so that this information can be used for the purchase of verified carbon offsets, and ultimately, certification as a carbon neutral product.
